Garceau Nets Game Winning Goal To Give Women's Soccer 2-1 Win Over George Washington

Washington, D.C. - Senior defender Cindy Garceau (Upton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to lead UMass to a 2-1 win over George Washington today in Atlantic 10 women?s soccer action. The goal marked her third goal in three games and the second game winning goal of her four year career. UMass improves to 6-2-1 on the season and to a perfect 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play. George Washington falls to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in A-10 play.
The Colonials and the Minutewomen battled through over 50 minutes of scoreless soccer until junior Kara Green (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) connected on a ball from sophomore Sarah Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio) at 53:00. George Washington?s Malynda Nichol evened the game at 1-1 at the 75 minute mark when she connected on an 25 yard shot to the back post. Garceau scored the game winner on a diving header off a free kick from Jones with only 11 minutes left in the game to seal the win for UMass. The victory marked the fourth straight and the fifth in the last six games for the Minutewomen. Senior goalkeeper Angie Napoli (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up the win in the goal for UMass.
The Minutewomen travel to Virginia Tech on Sunday to take on the Hokies at 1:00 p.m.
