Massachusetts Baseball Advances to Beanpot Championship With 9-5 Triumph At Harvard

The Minutemen will take on Boston College on Tuesday, April 12, in Brighton, Mass.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball defeated Harvard University, 9-5, on Tuesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field in the Opening Round of the Baseball Beanpot, advancing to the Beanpot Championships next Tuesday, April 12. The Minutemen will face Boston College at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton, Massachusetts.
 
Kevin Skagerlind led the team, going 3-for-5, including his first collegiate home run, tallying one run and one RBI. Drew DeMartino went 2-for-3, recording a team-high three runs on the day. Dylan Judd and Nolan Tichy registered two RBI, while Tichy had two hits, along with DeMartino, Cole Hebble and Jacob Sloss.
 
UMass got on the board first in the first inning with an RBI single from Will MacLean, sending Hebble home from third. The Minutemen tallied another run as DeMartino crossed the plate on Judd's RBI single to left field. Harvard cut the deficit in half with an RBI single of their own.
 
Massachusetts notched one more run in the top of the third off Skagerlind's solo long ball. Harvard, however, took the lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs. The Crimson extended their lead with another RBI single that sent a runner in from second.
 
After a scoreless fifth, UMass brought the contest to a 5-5 draw. With DeMartino in scoring position and Judd on second, Tichy stepped up to the plate and hit a single to right center. DeMartino came in to score, as Judd rounded third and headed home for the tying run. Massachusetts totaled a run in both the seventh and eighth inning to make it a 7-5 game.
 
In the final frame, a sacrifice fly from Judd allowed Hanson to score a run to push the Minutemen ahead 8-5. Sloss singled out to right center, bringing DeMartino in to touch the plate. The Minutemen defense held off Harvard in the bottom of the inning to win 9-5.  
 
Blake Bennett (1-0) earned the victory for UMass, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out three in three complete innings of work. Zach Clevenger came in for two frames dealing three strikeouts, while Jack Pawloski came in in the ninth, giving up one hit. Porter Jordheim took the loss for the Crimson, pitching one inning and allowing one run, two hits and striking out one.
 
The contest against UMass Lowell has been postponed to Wednesday, April 13, at Earl Lorden Field at 3 p.m. The Minutemen will return to Atlantic 10 Conference play with a three-game series against Fordham on Friday, April 8, through Sunday, April 10. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's contests is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Sunday's finale will begin at 12 p.m.
