April 19, 2022 | Softball
Kendra Allen finished with four RBI on two hits and a pair of walks.
KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts softball team plated five runs in its final trip to the plate to come away with a 9-4 win over Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex. Kendra Allen drove in four runs for the Minutewomen on a pair of hits while Bella Pantoja pitched in two RBI.
A pair of hit batters and an Amy Smith single helped load the bases and set up an Allen bases loaded walk to make it a 1-0 contest in the top of the first. Allen came through with her second RBI in the third inning after Chloe Whittier walked and moved into scoring position before Allen's RBI single to right center field to make it 2-0.
Allen added two more RBI in the top of the fourth after Smith and Whittier strung together consecutive singles to put a pair on for the Minutewomen. Allen sent a two-out, two-RBI single to right field to plate Smith and Whittier and bring the score to 4-0.
Rhode Island added its first run in the bottom of the fourth and tied it up at 4-4 following a three-run fifth inning. Leilyn Alvarez brought the Rams within a run with a two-RBI triple to right center field before Ari Castillo drove in Rhode Island's final run with a RBI double to right center.
Consecutive walks from Sarah Keagy and Allen helped setup Kristina Day for a one-out, RBI single to give UMass a one-run advantage. Pantoja drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single to push the lead to three prior to a wild pitch and throwing error that scored Suggs and Pantoja to bring it to a 9-4 final.
Jessie DiPasquale picked up her eighth win in the circle as she threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits with a strikeout and no walks in relief. Julianne Bolton started the game off for the Minutewomen and went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts and a walk before being relieved by DiPasquale with one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the fifth.
The Minutewomen return home to Sortino Field for five consecutive home games beginning with UMass Lowell tomorrow at 3 p.m. before hosting Saint Joseph's this weekend in Atlantic 10 play.
