Minutewomen Fall To River Hawks, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field, 3-2. Jessie DiPasquale finished with nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work in the circle for the Minutewomen.
DiPasquale settled in after the first two UMass Lowell batters reached in the opening inning, striking out three straight to end the frame and leave the pair stranded. The junior struck out seven through three innings and finished the game with three earned runs surrendered and three walks.
The Minutewomen used a two-run inning with three hits in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead after four complete. Amy Smith and Chloe Whittier broke through for back-to-back singles to jumpstart the inning with the first pair of hits for UMass. Kendra Allen followed with a RBI on a fielder's choice for the game's opening run before Jules Shields sent a RBI single to left to make it a 2-0 contest.
The River Hawks plated three unanswered runs to secure the win, beginning with a pair in the fifth to tie at 2-2. UMass Lowell tied it up with a RBI groundout to first and came back with a two-out RBI base hit in the sixth to make it a one-run game in the visitor's favor.
Grace Cadden added a pair of hits for a UMass squad that finished with five on the game.
The Minutewomen remain at home this weekend for an Atlantic 10 three-game series against Saint Joseph's. The series begins on Saturday with a noon doubleheader and wraps up on Sunday at noon with game three.
