Softball Takes Doubleheader From URI, Remains Unbeaten In A-10

April 24, 2018 | Softball

UMass improved to a perfect 16-0 in Atlantic 10 play with a pair of wins over the Rams.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team remained perfect in Atlantic 10 play on Tuesday afternoon as they swept a league doubleheader against Rhode Island at Sortino Field. The pair of wins marked the sixth A-10 series sweep for the Minutewomen (28-12 Overall, 16-0 A-10) heading into their next league series this weekend at Fordham in a battle between the top-two teams in the conference standings.

Game One – UMass 6, Rhode Island 2 - Box Score
UMass found themselves behind a run early in the series opener against the Rams (11-30 Overall, 3-12 A-10) after they scored one run in the opening inning off of three hits. Quinn Breidenbach entered the circle with two outs in the inning on her way to earning her third win of the season, striking out six batters while giving up a run in 6.1 innings.

The Minutewomen quickly responded with a pair of runs in the following inning thanks to some crafty baserunning as Jena Cozza stole home to tie it up before Erin Stacevicz reached home safely on the same play on a Rhode Island throwing error to go ahead 2-1. Cozza and Stacevicz both scored two runs each in game one.

Rhode Island tied things up at 2-2 in the third inning with a solo home run by Erika Yeager prior to a four-run fourth inning that put UMass in control.

Kaycee Carbone picked up one of her two hits in game one with the bases juiced and two outs in the fourth-inning, sending a fly ball to deep center field that narrowly stayed in the ballpark to clear the bases for a three-RBI double.

Melissa Garcia followed by driving in another run the next at-bat, singling on a ball that deflected off the URI pitcher to drive in Carbone after she moved over to third on a wild pitch to give UMass a 6-2 advantage that would hold the rest of the ballgame.

The UMass defense saved multiple runs in game one as Riley Gregoire made a sliding catch out in shallow right field for the third out in the fifth inning to leave the bases loaded, leaving three of the seven total runners left on base for URI in game one. With two outs in the seventh inning, Carbone robbed a home run for the third and final out with a pair of runners on that would have cut the UMass lead down to one run.

Game Two – UMass 2, Rhode Island 1 - Box Score
Freshman Kiara Oliver struck out a career-high 11 batters in game two on her way to improving to 15-3 in the circle on the year while bringing her season ERA down below two at 1.91 with a 0.80 ERA in league games. Oliver retired 13 straight batters to end the game, striking out seven batters during the span as she allowed just two hits over seven innings.

Gregoire drove in the only two runs for UMass in the second game of the doubleheader with one of her two hits on the afternoon, coming through with two runners in scoring position by sending a single to left field that brought home Caroline Videtto and Amy Smith to bring the score to 2-0. Smith finished game two with two hits on a 2-of-3 showing at the plate.

Rhode Island scored their only run of game two in the top of the third inning, bringing across an unearned run before Cozza ended the inning with a double play.

Garcia finished game two with a 3-of-3 showing at the plate, including a double with two outs in the third inning to help bring her batting average in league play up to a team-leading .500.

The Minutewomen will return to Sortino Field tomorrow for a single game against UConn scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
