UMass Sweeps Doubleheader Against Fordham To Remain Atop A-10

The Minutewomen will have a chance to clinch the regular-season title with a win in tomorrow’s series finale.
Game One – UMass 9, Fordham 5 - Box Score
Fordham jumped ahead early in this one before a five-run second-inning for the Minutewomen helped put them in control for the rest of the way. The Rams scored two runs in the first to go ahead 2-0 after consecutive home runs by Skylar Johnston and Madi Shaw.
The Minutewomen got on base early and often in the first four innings as the leadoff runner reached safely in the first four UMass at-bats. Madison Gimpl opened up the second by reaching on a hit-by-pitch and subsequently moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Smith.
Kaitlyn Stavinoha came through the following at-bat to bring in Gimpl with a RBI double off the left field wall and moved over to third on a wild pitch later in the frame. Stavinoha came across to score on a Hannah Bunker stolen base that saw the ball fly into center field to tie it up at 2-2.
Erin Stacevicz put one in play to bring in bring in another one to give UMass their first lead of the day that would hold the rest of the way, scoring Bunker from third on an error by the second basemen.
Kaycee Carbone picked up her first two of four RBI in game two, extending the UMass lead to three runs with a two-RBI single that scored Cozza and Stacevicz to go up 5-2.
Cozza hit her 13th home run of the season in the fourth-inning after Fordham cut the lead to two with a two-out RBI single in the third. The senior sent a two-run shot deep to left field to bring in Riley Gregoire with her 34th home run of her career, giving her sole possession of second all-time on the UMass career home run list as she put UMass up 7-3.
Carbone came through once again in the fifth inning to push the lead to a game-high six runs as her two-RBI single in the infield spun and got away from the Fordham defense to bring in Bunker and Cozza. Carbone finished the series-opening contest with three hits on four plate appearances.
Meg Colleran earned the win in the circle to move to 11-5 on the season as she struck out four in 4.1 innings of work. Colleran was replaced in the circle by Oliver after a two-run Fordham home run in the fifth inning cut the UMass advantage down to four runs. Oliver struck out one and allowed two baserunners in relief, picking up two straight outs to end the game with runners on second and third and the heart of the Fordham order coming up.
Game Two – UMass 6, Fordham 2 - Box Score
Oliver kept it going in game two, no-hitting the Rams until it was broken up with two outs in the sixth inning on a Shaw home run for Fordham's only runs of the second game. The freshman settled in to retire 10 straight batters after allowing a leadoff walk to open up her 18th start of the season on her way to improving to 16-3 while tying her career-high for strikeouts with 11.
UMass pressured the Fordham defense early in the first three innings, loading the bases in the second before putting Cozza within 60-feet of the plate in the third as the game remained scoreless before a three-run fourth inning for the Minutewomen.
Caroline Videtto scored the first run of the game on a Bunker RBI fielder's choice, sliding head first under the tag for the first run of game two. Stacevicz extended the lead to three runs after Cozza was intentionally walked for the fourth time in the doubleheader to load the bases. The junior came through with a two-RBI single up the middle to bring the score to 3-0.
Stavinoha opened up the sixth inning by going yard on the first pitch of the frame, sending her second home run of the season over the wall in right field to begin a three-run frame for the Minutewomen.
Cozza followed with her second long ball of the day and 14th of the year later in the inning, driving in Riley Gregoire on a long home run to left center field to bring the score to 6-0 before the eventual Fordham home run in the sixth brought the score to a final 6-2.
The Minutewomen will have a chance to clinch the A-10 Regular-Season Championship tomorrow with game three of the series against the Rams scheduled for 1 p.m.
