Saturday Sweep for Softball at SLU

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (15-16, 4-1 A-10) picked up two wins at Saint Louis (14-18, 3-7 A-10) on Saturday, April 8. The Minutewomen will wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. CT/ 1 p.m. ET.
Jena Cozza returned to the lineup as designated hitter after missing the first 29 games due to injury. In game one, she had one hit and scored one run. In game two, she added an RBI to her outing.
Game One
UMass defeated Saint Louis, 3-1, in game one. Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched a full seven innings, earning her eighth win of the season. She struck out seven batters and gave up just four hits and no earned runs.
The Minutewomen picked up eight hits as sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha led UMass' offense, going three-for-four with a double and an RBI. Cozza and senior Tara Klee each were credited with singles, along with the sophomore squad of Erin Stacevicz, Melissa Garcia and Kaycee Carbone.
Game Two
Freshman pitcher Candace Denis earned herself a win and paced the Minutewomen to a 4-2 victory over the Billikens in game two. She threw five innings, giving up four hits and striking out two batters. Colleran pitched the final two innings without giving up any hits or runs.
The Minutewomen scored two runs in the first inning. Stacevicz led off and reached on a single, followed by Stavinoha reaching on a fielding error. Sacrifice fly balls by Cozza and Klee scored two runners and put UMass on the board.
In the top of the fourth, Klee (two-for-three) reached on a double and crossed home plate thanks to an RBI double by Carbone. Freshman Kate Dennis drove in Carbone with a single up the middle, giving UMass the 4-0 lead over Saint Louis.
Three hits in the bottom of the sixth scored two runs for Saint Louis but the Minutewomen were able to squash the momentum and ended the game with a 4-2 victory.
