Minutewomen Split DH With Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (19-18, 8-3 Atlantic 10) picked up a win and a loss against Fordham (32-12, 8-4 A-10) on Saturday to wrap the three-game series. With Friday's series-opening 5-4 victory over the Rams, the Minutewomen collected their first series win over Fordham since the 2012 season.
Game One
UMass defeated Fordham, 12-4, in game one of the Saturday doubleheader. Junior Meg Colleran started on the mound and pitched six innings, earning her 11th win of the season. She struck out five batters, giving up six hits and one earned run.
The Minutewomen started off strong in the first inning, putting three runs on the board. UMass loaded the bases with the heart of the order reaching base after being hit by pitches, and senior Tara Klee singled to centerfield to drive in a run. The bases remained loaded for sophomore Melissa Garcia and her single to right field drove in two RBI, giving UMass the 3-0 lead.
UMass' offense was bolstered by sophomore Kaycee Carbone and senior Jena Cozza, both going two-for-two and scoring two runs. Senior Ashton Wince, freshman Candace Denis and sophomores Erin Stacevicz and Melissa Garcia each picked up two hits for the Minutewomen while Klee and sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha earned the last two hits for the team.
Game Two
The Minutewomen fell to Fordham, 7-4, in game two. Freshman Candace Denis started in the circle for the Minutewomen, pitching seven innings and striking out five.
Cozza went two-for-three with her first homerun of the season coming late in the seventh inning. Klee went two-for-four at the plate with one run and one RBI. Stavinoha went one-for-four, scoring one run.
Carbone and freshman Madison Gimpl, as the designated hitter, both went two-for-four with Gimpl picking up a stolen base.
UMass will play road games at Connecticut on Tuesday (4 p.m.) and at Boston College on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
