Fourth Inning Surge Aids Baseball To 8-5 Victory Over Fordham

Minutemen score eight in the fourth, led by a two-run homer from Gervasi.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball broke a scoreless tie with an eight-run fourth inning, collecting an 8-5 triumph over Fordham University on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field in the teams' series opener. It marked UMass' second consecutive victory in a Friday matchup.
Kevin Skagerlind led the Minutemen going 3-for-4, including a double, adding a run and two RBI. Cole Hebble tallied two hits, also hitting a double, and contribute one run and one RBI. Mike Gervasi's lone hit was his two-run home run, while Jacob Sloss had two RBI on a double of his own.
The game remained scoreless entering the fourth, as Skagerlind led off the frame with a walk. Gervasi kicked off the scoring for UMass, sailing the ball over the left field fence to make it 2-0. Drew DeMartino walked in his turn at bat, before advancing to second on Will MacLean's single to left. Dylan Judd grounded to Fordham's pitcher off a sacrifice bunt, putting DeMartino and MacLean into scoring position. Sloss doubled down the left field line, bringing both DeMartino and MacLean across the plate, making it a 4-0 contest.
With one out still in the fourth inning, a single from Nolan Tichy sent Sloss to third, while Collin Shapiro laid down a bunt allowing Sloss to touch home plate. Another double from Hebble brought home Tichy, before a single to right center field sent Shapiro and Hebble in to score, at an 8-0 game.
Fordham notched its first run in the seventh inning, before adding four more in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as UMass came out on top, 8-5.
Kevin Dow (5-1) went an impressive 8.2 innings, allowing only five runs on 12 hits, walking three and dealing four strikeouts. Cole Koeppel entered the game in the top of the ninth with two outs to earn his first collegiate save. Cameron Knox (2-2) took the loss for the Rams, giving up eight runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out five in six complete innings of work.
Massachusetts and Fordham square off for game two of the series on Saturday, April 9, at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
