April 01, 2022 | Baseball
DeMartino and Hebble record home runs in the victory, as the Minutemen score the most runs since the 2009 season.
The Minutemen's 23 runs were the most since the 2009 season, which saw 25 runs versus Fairfield (March 1) and 20 against Duquesne (May 16).
Hebble led the team going 5-for-6 on the afternoon and totaled a season-high seven RBIs. DeMartino had two hits, including his home runs, while bringing in five runs. Kevin Skagerlind contributed three hits and three RBIs. Hebble led the team in runs, as well, with four, followed by DeMartino and Jacob Sloss with three apiece.
Saint Joseph's got on the board first, scoring two in the top of the first, before DeMartino's two-run homer tied up the game in the bottom half. The Hawks regained the lead after scoring two more in the top half the second, but a three-run bottom of the frame gave UMass a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Massachusetts put up eight total runs. The frame saw three two-RBI doubles from Sloss, Mike Gervasi and DeMartino to extend the Minutemen's lead to 13-4. UMass pulled ahead 16-4 on long ball from Hebble that brought in Sloss and Ryan Coleman in the bottom of the fourth.
SJU added three more runs to its tally to make it a 16-7 contest in the sixth, with UMass remaining in the lead, but Massachusetts scored seven more to seal the deal, as the final two and a half frames went scoreless.
Kevin Dow (4-1) earned the win for UMass, allowing four runs on 13 hits, walking one and striking out five in five complete innings of work. Ian McCole (0-3) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits, and getting one strikeout.
