UMass Comeback Falls Short Against Ball State

The Minutemen rallied back from down 17 points halfway through the second half to eventually pull within a point.
SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's comeback bid fell just short as they were defeated by Ball State on the final day of the Jersey Mike's Classic, 89-86. The Minutemen (3-3 Overall) trailed by as many as 17 with just under 11 minutes remaining before cutting the deficit down to one with 32-seconds remaining.
UMass outscored Ball State 26-12 for the final 10:45 of play and held the Cardinals without a field goal for the final 3:32. T.J. Weeks Jr. helped the Minutemen pull within single digits for the first time since 17:06 in the second with one of his three 3-pointers to bring the score to 81-74 as part of a 7-0 scoring run. Weeks finished 8-of-12 from the field for 19 points to go along with a tied for game-high eight rebounds.
The Minutemen used a 6-0 scoring run to pull within four with just over two minutes remaining before another Weeks layup with 32-seconds left brought UMass within one at 87-86. UMass had a chance to tie or take the lead coming out of the timeout with just under 20-seconds remaining but could not convert.
Trent Buttrick and C.J. Kelly each added 19 points of their own for a UMass team that had five players finish in double figures. C.J. Kelly shot 4-of-7 from 3-point range as the team finished 13-of-33 from beyond the arc on the day.
Rich Kelly scored 10 points and added four assists while Dyondre Dominguez scored a season-high 10 points on 3-of-5 from range.
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center for their next three games, beginning with UMass Lowell on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. on NESN+.
