AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team welcomes in Penn State to the Mullins Center for a nationally televised game at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The matchup marks the 24th time that the two former Atlantic 10 foes have met with the Minutemen holding a 7-4 advantage at home while the Nittany Lions lead the all-time series 13-10.
Last Time Out
The Minutemen fell on the road at Yale 91-71 in their first game away from home on Friday. Noah Fernandes scored a team-high 13 points with Rich Kelly (11) and Trent Buttrick (11) each finishing in double figures. Greg Jones hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with nine points while C.J. Kelly added nine on 2-of-3 from range in his first UMass appearance.
Series vs. Penn State
UMass and Penn State meet for the 24th time and for the first time since 1991 on Monday. The Minutemen are 7-4 against the Nittany Lions at home but trail the all-time series 13-10.
The Season Opener
UMass rallied from an early 15-2 deficit to comeback to beat UMBC 77-60 on Tuesday in the Mullins Center. Trent Buttrrick and T.J. Weeks each poured in 16 points and added seven boards to help the Minutemen grab their first lead of the night with 15:50 left in the second half, which they held for the remainder of the game. Noah Fernandes scored 12 and dished out four assists while Rich Kelly recorded a game-high six assists.
UMass, Meet Trent
Graduate forward Trent Buttrick scored 13 consecutive points for the Minutemen in the second half of the season opener to help UMass extend its lead from five to 14 in the span. Buttrick knocked down six of his final seven shot attempts and finished the night 3-of-8 from range with 15 of his 16 points coming in the second half. The forward also added a career-high five steals in the win and picked up two more steals early at Yale on his way to finishing with 11 points and four boards.
