The Minutemen erased a 17-point halftime deficit; Pierre scores 23 for UMass
AMHERST, Mass. – Down by 17 points with 14:51 to play, the UMass men's basketball team (2-2) clawed all the way back to tie the game at 84 with 2:09 to play, but Bryant (7-2) ended the game on a 9-4 run to hold off the Minutemen on Monday afternoon at the Mullins Center, 93-88.
The Minutemen, trailing by eight at the break, received 23 points from captain Carl Pierre, including back-to-back threes to spark a 9-2 UMass run and the comeback. Massachusetts then used a quick 6-0 run thanks to free throws from Pierre, Noah Fernandes and Javohn Garcia to bring the deficit three with five minutes left, and T.J. Weeks Jr. buried a three with two minutes left to level the game at 84.
Pierre led all Minutemen in scoring, and was joined in double-figures by Fernandes (14), Garcia (12), Tre Mitchell (12) and Weeks Jr. (12). Mitchell finished 4-of-9 from the floor with three rebounds and three blocks.
The Bulldogs, which shot 69% in the first half and 58% (32-of-55) for the game, was paced by Michael Green III's 33 points on 12-of-16 shooting and 4-of-7 from deep. Green III led four Bryant players in double-figures, joined by Peter Kiss (21 points), Chris Childs (14 points) and Charles Pride (11 points).
The Bulldogs were on fire from the floor to start the day, going 20-of-29 overall in the first half to take a 48-40 lead at the break, including 15-of-18 from inside the three-point arc. Bryant used runs of 13-4 and 9-2 to lead by as many as 10, with three Kiss (12), Pride (11) and Green III (11) all reaching double-digits early.
Pierre kept the Minutemen in it with 12 first half points, capping an 8-0 UMass run with 8:32 to play until half before scoring seven straight Massachusetts points in less than a minute to keep the Minutemen, who shot 39% (13-of-33) and 3-of-16 from deep in the first, within striking distance.
The hot shooting from Bryant continued into the second half, using an 11-0 run to take a 59-42 lead with 15:59 left before UMass came alive down the stretch.
Massachusetts will be back in action on December 30 when the Minutemen return to conference play against George Mason. Tip-off at the Mullins Center will be announced when confirmed, and the game will air on NESN and ESPN+.
