Men’s Hoops Heads To South Carolina On Saturday

Minutemen and Gamecocks set for 2 PM tip on the SEC Network+/WatchESPN.
AMHERST, Mass. – Looking to end a three-game skid, the UMass men's basketball team heads to South Carolina for a Saturday afternoon match up. The Minutemen are coming off a tough 68-66 loss at Quinnipiac on Wednesday night, while the Gamecocks fell 76-60 to Temple at Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday night.
The game will be aired online via the SEC Network+ and will also be available on ESPN3/WatchESPN. On the radio dial, Adam Frenier and Tim Collins will call the action with the game being carried on WHMP (1400/1240 AM, 96.9/107.5 FM) in the Pioneer Valley. The audio stream will also be available online via www.UMassAthletics.com and the Tune-In App (search WHMP).
In Wednesday's game, UMass (3-4) rallied back in the second half from a 12-point deficit, but could not keep the momentum in the two-point road loss to the Bobcats. C.J. Anderson scored a career-high 23 points highlighted by 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, while Rashaan Holloway added 14 points and seven boards in a foul-shortened 17 minutes of action. Quinnipiac made the most of a free throw shooting disparity hitting 22-of-27 shots compared to just 3-of-5 for the Minutemen.
Luwane Pipkins continues to lead UMass in the scoring column with a 17.3 point per game average to go with a 3.9 assist per game average. Holloway is second in scoring with 10.7 points and 5.4 rebounds, while Anderson moved up to third after Wednesday's performance with 9.9 points and a team-best 4.4 assists.
Despite a pair of back-to-back low scoring nights for Pipkins, he continues to be one of the Atlantic 10 scoring leaders ranking ninth overall. Anderson's 4.4 assists per game is good for sixth-best in the league.
As a team, UMass is averaging 72.9 points a night which is sixth-best in the league. The Minutemen are also one of the better shooting teams in the conference hitting 45.0 percent of their shots (6th best), 34.5 percent of their three-point attempts (5th best) and 76.6 percent of their free throw attempts (2nd best). UMass also ranks among the top six in rebounding and assists, while sitting third in blocked shots.
South Carolina (5-2) had a three-game winning streak broken up with the loss to the Owls. The Gamecocks are averaging 73.3 points this season headlined by the trio of Chris Silva (12.7 ppg), Maik Kotsar (11.1 ppg), and Frank Booker (10.0 ppg). Justin Minaya and Hassani Gravett are both just under double-figures at 9.6 points and 8.4 points respectively. Silva leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 boards a night.
Following the trip to the Palmetto State, UMass will return home to host five-straight encompassing nearly all of December. The Minutemen kickoff the stretch on Wednesday, Dec. 6 against Holy Cross (7 PM) before closing out the week against Providence on Saturday, Dec. 9 (3 PM). The Providence game will be the first of UMass' televised games with Eleven Sports and NESN.
