#13 Massachusetts Hockey Edged By #20 Cornell, 3-1
November 01, 2025 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of power-play goals proved to be the difference as No. 13 University of Massachusetts hockey dropped the second game of its weekend set against No. 20 Cornell, 3-1 on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 6-3-0 on the year, while the Big Red improve to 1-1-0.
"I thought tonight was almost the exact opposite of last night," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Last night, we were better on the special teams. Tonight, they were, and I thought we were better 5-on-5 than they were tonight. Two games how I expected them to turn out—low scoring. Unfortunately we took some penalties that we didn't need to tonight after the whistle, the face off. That was a dagger to take that two-minute 5-on-3 power play. But I liked our game 5-on-5, thought we played better than we did last night."
Cornell opened the scoring 1:41 into the first as Luke Devlin intercepted the puck behind the UMass net and fed Gio DiGiulian for a point-blank strike.
The Minutemen found the equalizer at the 15:16 mark of the opening period. Junior Jack Musa collected a pass from freshman Václav Nestrašil in the neutral zone, stickhandled around a Big Red defender and found sophomore Mikey DeAngelo across the slot for the one-timer finish.
Cornell regained the lead 16:22 into the second. Charlie Major tucked the puck in at the doorstep off a setup from Ryan Walsh and Caton Ryan.
With the Big Red on a 5-on-3 and senior Lucas Ölvestad without a stick after blocking a shot, Cornell added some insurance with the squad's second power-play marker of the night. Walsh and Major found Xavier Veilleux in the slot for the one-timer at 13:28.
UMass out-shot the Big Red, 34-28 and went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Cornell was 2-for-4.
Mintutemen netminder junior Michael Hrabal finished with 25 saves and Alexis Cournoyer stopped 33 shots for the Big Red.
UMass will return to action on Thursday, November 6, when the squad will play host to No. 12 Maine at 7 p.m.
