Hebble, Gervasi register doubles, adding to Minutemen’s three hits.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Graduate student Cole Hebble and junior Mike Gervasi recorded a double each to contribute to the University of Massachusetts' three hits, as the baseball team was shut out, 28-0, at Davidson College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
UMass moves to 20-20-1 overall and 7-10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Davidson improves to 36-9 overall on the season, including a league record of 14-3.
Hebble, Gervasi and Collin Shapiro all registered one hit apiece, as Shapiro hit a single to go along with the pair of doubles, for Massachusetts' three hits of the day.
Davidson got the bats going right out of the gate, scoring seven runs in the first inning. A lead-off solo home run out to left field for the Wildcats' Parker Nolan extended their lead to 8-0 after two.
In the third, Davidson pushed across six more runs, before tacking on nine more in the fourth to pull ahead, 23-0. The Wildcats scored another five in the fifth to make it a 28-0 contest.
Tyler Dalton (1-4) took the loss for UMass after giving up seven runs on five this, walking one and striking out one in one complete inning. Blake Hely (8-0) secured the victory on the mound for Davidson, tossing six complete frames, and only allowing two hits and two walks, while dealing six strikeouts.
Massachusetts and Davidson will compete in the series finale on Sunday, May 8, at 1 p.m. on ESPN+ at Wilson Field.
