Baseball Falls Short In Game One At Davidson, 5-3

The Minutemen came back within two on DeMartino’s eighth home run of the season.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell short to Davidson College, 5-3, in game one of the three-game series at Wilson Field on Friday afternoon. The Minutemen came back within two after a solo home run from graduate student Drew DeMartino in the eighth inning, but the team's rally came up short.
UMass moves to 20-19-1 overall and 7-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Davidson improves to 35-9 overall on the season, including a league record of 13-3.
Kevin Skagerlind accumulated a team-high two hits, while five other Minutemen recorded one hit, which included DeMartino with a long ball and Will MacLean and Steve Luttazi with doubles. Collin Shapiro, DeMartino and Luttazi all scored for Massachusetts, while DeMartino and Skagerlind registered one RBI apiece.
Davidson took the lead early after grabbing two runs in the first inning off a two-run base knock. The Wildcats registered two solo home runs in the second to extend their lead to 4-0, before adding another run in the fourth.
In the fifth, Cole Hebble got the jump to head to second with DeMartino at the bat with a full count. DeMartino struck out swinging as the Davidson catcher threw down to second to get Hebble. Shapiro was sent home from third on the throw down, giving UMass its first tally of the day. The Minutemen tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Skagerlind to make it a 5-2 contest.
DeMartino blasted a solo shot early in the eighth frame, marking his eighth long ball of the season, to chip away at Davidson's lead and get back within two, but Davidson was able to maintain its lead to bring the game to a final score of 5-3.
Kevin Dow (6-3) took the loss for Massachusetts after pitching four innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, walking two and dealing five strikeouts. Nolan Devos (6-2) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out eight in four innings of work to pick up the win for Davidson. Bennett Flynn earned the save for the Wildcats, making it his fourth of the season.
