A Season-High Four Home Runs Aids Baseball To 10-7 Victory At Fairfield
May 03, 2022 | Baseball
Hebble, MacLean, Wilde and Gervasi record long balls on the day, to give Minutemen a season best four on the day.
The Minutemen improve to 20-18-1 overall, while the Stags drop to 24-17 overall.
Hebble led UMass with three hits, including a homer, a triple and a double, while Drew DeMartino, MacLean, Gervasi, Nolan Tichy and Wilde all followed with two hits apiece. Hebble also sat atop the leaderboard with four runs, matching his season-high, as MacLean grabbed two runs of his own. MacLean drove in four RBIs, marking a career best, with Hebble and Gervasi both knocking in two runs each.
A pair of home runs in the first inning gave the Minutemen an early lead. After Kevin Skagerlind reached base on an error and advanced to second, Hebble stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run home run over the left field fence. DeMartino singled through the left side, before MacLean cranked a two-run shot out to right field to make it a 4-0 contest.
A solo long ball from Wilde brought UMass' lead to 5-0 in the second inning, while a sacrifice fly by MacLean allowed Hebble to score to add to Massachusetts' tally in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Fairfield got on the board and put up three runs to cut its deficit in half, 6-3.
After a scoreless fourth frame, the Minutemen pushed further ahead, taking back the three runs from the Stags in the fifth. With a fielder's choice that advanced Hebble to third and gave MacLean first, MacLean stole second to get two runners into scoring position. Judd grounded out to the third baseman, pushing Hebble across the dish and placing MacLean on third. Gervasi came up to bat, blasting a two-run homer to left field, for his fifth of the season, and giving UMass lead of 9-3.
The Stags notched another run in the sixth off an RBI double to make it a 9-4 game, but the Minutemen grabbed another off another sacrifice fly from MacLean in the top of the ninth. Fairfield scored three more in the bottom of the final frame, but UMass came out on top with a 10-7 victory.
Scott LeSieur (4-0) earned the win for UMass, pitching four complete innings, and allowing three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out three. Peter Ostensen (3-2) took the loss for the Stags, giving up six runs, five hits, and striking out two in three innings of work.
