Gervasi’s RBI single lifts Minutemen over Bobcats in 10th inning.
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Mike Gervasi's two-out single to right center field drove in sophomore Kevin Skagerlind from scoring position in the bottom of the 10th to lift the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Quinnipiac University on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
UMass improved to 21-24-1 overall on the season, while Quinnipiac fell to 15-30.
Gervasi sat atop the leaderboard with three hits, two RBIs and two walks, and added a run to his stat sheet. Will MacLean recorded two hits and also tallied both one run and one walk himself. Skagerlind, Drew DeMartino and Collin Shapiro all contributed a hit, while Shapiro and Dylan Judd knocked in on run apiece.
After two scoreless frames, Quinnipiac got on the board first after an RBI double in the third. In the fifth inning, Shapiro singled up the middle, allowing Gervasi to touch the plate and knot the game up at 1-1.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to make it a 3-1 contest. Quinnipiac's lead was short-lived, as the Minutemen notched two runs of their own to bring the game to a 3-3 draw. DeMartino came across the dish on Judd's sacrifice fly, before a single to right from Gervasi helped MacLean to cross the plate.
The two teams stayed tied throughout the seventh, eighth and ninth frames, and needed extra innings to decide a winner. UMass was able to escape out of the top of the 10th with no damage done to head to the bottom half of the inning. Skagerlind led off with a single to left field before a sacrifice bunt by DeMartino pushed Skagerlind to second base. After MacLean was intentionally walked, Judd grounded out, but helped Skagerlind and MacLean in to scoring position. Gervasi hit a single to right center field, sending Skagerlind from third to home to lift the Minutemen to a 4-3 walk-off victory.
Blake Bennett (2-0) earned the win on the mound for UMass, pitching one complete inning, and only allowing one hit, two walks and striking out one. Andrew Cubberly (0-1) took the loss for Quinnipiac after giving up one run on three hits, walking three and dealing two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
