Baseball Falls To George Mason, 8-0

Minutemen and Patriots split series, 1-1
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 8-0, to George Mason University on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The Minutemen and Patriots are tied, 1-1, in the weekend series.
The Minutemen move to 19-17-1 overall and 7-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Patriots improve to 15-26 overall and 7-7 in the league.
Kevin Skagerlind, Will MacLean, Nolan Tichy and Collin Shapiro all had one hit apiece to combine for Massachusetts' four hits. MacLean and Shapiro each recorded a stolen base on the day.
George Mason pulled ahead early in the first with three runs scored, with all on walks with the bases loaded. The Patriots extended their lead in the second on a three-run double down the right field line to make it 6-0, before a single up the middle added another run to George Mason's tally.
One more run crossed the plate for the Patriots in the third, and six blank frames, ending the contest, 8-0, allowing George Mason to tie up the weekend series.
Zack Given (0-3) had the loss for UMass, giving up seven runs on four hits, walking five and striking out three in two complete innings of work. Jack Steele entered the game for the Minutemen in the third where he allowed one run, four hits, walked three and dealt five strikeouts. Ben Shields (2-2) earned the win on the mound for George Mason, giving up only two hits, walking three and striking out seven batters in five innings, while Jared Lyons registered the save, as he allowed only two hits, walked two and had three strikeouts in four innings pitched.
The Minutemen look to clinch the series, as Massachusetts and Towson compete in the series finale on Sunday, May 1, at 12 p.m., at the Earl.
