Dayton Takes Game Two, 12-3, Over Baseball

April 23, 2022 | Baseball

Gervasi registers second home run of the series in the loss.

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 12-3, to the University of Dayton on Saturday afternoon at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. Junior Mike Gervasi recorded his second home run of the series to put UMass on the board.

Jacob Sloss went 2-for-4 on the day, while five other Minutemen registered a hit of their own, which included Gervasi and his solo long ball. UMass' three runs came from Gervasi, Will MacLean and Nolan Tichy with one apiece, while Gervasi, Steve Luttazi and Sloss had one RBI each.

Dayton picked up two runs in the first inning, before getting out to a 5-0 lead with three more runs scored in the third. The Flyers combined for seven runs, as they tallied on in the fourth frame, four in the fifth and their final two in the sixth.

UMass began a small rally in the seventh inning, as Gervasi sailed the first pitch out to left field for his second home run of the series and fifth of the year.  Luttazi singled through the left side to allow MacLean to come across the plate to make it a 12-2 game, before Sloss singled up the middle late to send Tichy home. The rally fell short as Dayton picked up the final out of the inning.

With both teams scoreless in the eighth and ninth frames, Dayton came out on top with the final score of 12-3.

Tyler Dalton (1-2) had the loss for Massachusetts, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two in three innings of work. Zack Given matched his career-high in strikeouts with five after entering for the last five innings, while giving up seven runs on seven hits and walking two. Mark Manfredi (1-2) secured the win for the Flyers, pitching 6.2 frames, allowing three runs, five hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Massachusetts will face Dayton in the series finale on Sunday, April 24, at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium at 12 p.m.
