Baseball Falls At #15 UConn, 28-11

April 19, 2022 | Baseball

Minutemen host Sacred Heart on Wednesday, April 20, at Earl Lorden Field for a 3 p.m. contest.

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball team got off to a hot start but was unable to keep the momentum going as the Minutemen faltered at the No. 15-ranked University of Connecticut, 28-11, on Tuesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.

Nolan Tichy went 4-for-5 on the day, including his second home run of the season and a career-high two doubles, while contributing two runs and a season-high three RBI. Steve Luttazi was also 3-for-4 on the afternoon, adding one run and two RBI. Will MacLean had one run on two hits and registered three RBI, matching a career best. Dylan Judd totaled two hits, two runs and two RBI, while Cole Hebble tallied two hits and two runs of his own, and one RBI.

UMass got the bats going early, as the Minutemen scored five runs in the top of the opening frame. MacLean grounded out to the third baseman, as Hebble scored to get Massachusetts on the board first. Judd doubled to left to bring around both Kevin Skagerlind and Drew DeMartino to pull ahead 3-0, before Tichy registered a two-run homer, marking his second long ball of the year, to extend the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the first, UConn put a run on the board on an error, before adding another to make it a 5-2 contest. With two runners on base, the Huskies' Ben Huber hit a home run to right center field to bring the game to a 5-5 draw heading into the second.

After a scoreless second, Massachusetts collected six more runs in the top of the third. MacLean got the go-ahead run off Tichy's ground-rule double. Luttazi singled through the right side that brought Judd and Tichy home from third and second, respectively, before Luttazi scored on a double by Hebble to lead 9-5. Late in the frame, MacLean singled up the middle that went through both the second baseman and shortstop, allowing Hebble and Skagerlind to pull the Minutemen ahead 11-5.

UConn added nine runs in the bottom half of the third, which included a three-RBI double, and had six more in the fourth to lead 20-11. In the sixth, the Huskies scored five more, before putting up three more in the seventh to make it a 28-11 contest and bring the game to its final score.

Tucker Wittman (0-1) takes the loss for the Minutemen, pitching one inning and allowing 11 runs on eight hits and walking two. Cole Chudoba (2-1) earned the win for UConn, giving up only four hits, walking one and striking out four in 5.2 innings.
