Massachusetts Baseball Edges Towson In Rubber Game, 5-4

DeMartino tallies a season-high three RBIs, including a two-run on his fifth double of the season.
TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball took two-of-three in the weekend series at Towson University after winning 5-4 in on Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Graduate student Drew DeMartino recorded three a season-high three RBIs on the day, as the Minutemen improved to 8-7-1 on the season for their second consecutive weekend series triumph.
With three RBIs, DeMartino went 2-for-4, including a double, while Aidan Wilde recorded a multi-hit performance, as well, that included a double of his own. Kevin Skagerlind and Steve Luttazi each registered RBI singles in the final frame.
Towson led, 1-0, after putting up a run late in the bottom of the first, but the Minutemen claimed the lead in top half of the third by one run. DeMartino brought in Cole Hebble and Skagerlind for two-runs on a two-out double. The double marked the fifth two-base hit of the year for the graduate student.
UMass maintained its lead through the next three innings, totaling three straight inning-ending double plays, before Towson scored three in the seventh. The Tigers walked with the bases loaded forcing the tying run home and added two more on a two-RBI single to left center, to regain a 4-2 lead.
The Minutemen got the bats going in the ninth frame as Will MacLean led off with a single. Jacob Sloss lined a single to center field as MacLean advanced to third. Luttazi hit a sacrifice bunt that moved MacLean across home plate and sending Sloss to second. Chris Pearsons stepped up to the plate and took his base after being hit by a pitch, before Carter Hanson came in as Pearsons pinch runner. Hebble was hit by a pitch, pushing Sloss to third and Hanson to second base. Skagerlind singled through the left side in his turn allowing Sloss to come home and bring the game to a 4-4 draw. With Hanson in scoring position, DeMartino hit a two-out single to knock in the go-ahead run, before the final out of the top of the inning.
Jack Pawloski struck out the first batter in the bottom of the ninth but walked the second batter for Towson. A ground ball for the Tigers to the shortstop, allowed UMass' defense to turn two for the fourth time to record the second and third out to close out the contest.
Pawloski (1-0) was the winner on the mound, tallying two strikeouts and walking one in 2.1 innings of work. Daniel Livnat started on the rubber for the UMass, pitching six innings, allowing one run on seven hits, three walks and striking out three, before Zach Clevenger entered for 0.2 innings, giving up three hits, three runs, two walks and earning one strikeout. Towson's Jake Pecilunas (1-2) was on the hook for the loss, working one inning during which Massachusetts had one run on two hits with no walks or strikeouts.
The Minutemen travel to Albany, N.Y., for a weekday game versus University of Albany on Tuesday, March 29, at 3 p.m.
