Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short At Towson

Gervasi records three RBIs on the afternoon.

TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball team came up short, 9-7, to Towson University in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Junior Mike Gervasi registered three RBIs to lead the team, while tallying two hits, including a double.
 
Dylan Judd followed Gervasi with two RBIs on the day, while also recording a double. Drew DeMartino and Nolan Tichy each had an RBI, as well. Kevin Skagerlind led in hits, going 3-for-5, with Chris Pearsons and Gervasi tallying two hits apiece. Pearsons contributed two of the Minutemen's seven runs.
 
UMass got on the board first, as Gervasi singled up the middle, bringing home Cole Hebble. In the bottom of the inning, Towson brought the game to a 1-1 draw, before scoring three more to lead, 4-1.
 
The Minutemen got a run back to cut the deficit in half in the top of the second. With Aidan Wilde on second after a double, Tichy lined a single to center field, allowing Wilde to run the bases and touch home plate.
 
After a scoreless third, Towson picked up another run, but UMass closed the gap back to two in the fifth inning. Skagerlind led off the top of the fifth with a double to right field, before Gervasi stepped up to the plate. Gervasi hit a double to left center, sending around Skagerlind.
 
The Tigers grabbed two more runs to extend its lead, 7-3, in the bottom of the sixth frame. Pearsons came home on a DeMartino sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 game for Massachusetts in the top of the seventh inning, but Towson collected two more tallies in the eighth.
 
The final frame saw a UMass rally, totaling three more runs. Gervasi grounded out, advancing Pearson to second and allowing Will MacLean home.  Judd contributed a two-run double late in the inning, sending Pearsons and DeMartino, who walked in his at bat, across the plate, but it was not enough, as Towson recorded its final out of the contest.
 
Jack Steele (1-3) took the loss for Massachusetts, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up four runs on two hits and walking three. Zack Given entered the game for UMass, allowing three runs, four hits, one walk and striking out one in 5.0 innings of work, before Blake Bennett came out of the bullpen, going 2.1 frames, allowing two runs, three hits and had one strikeout. Nate Nabholz got the win for the Tigers, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking two and earning five strikeouts.
 
Massachusetts continues its series with Towson on Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m., at Schuerholz Park.
