Baseball Falls, 17-6, To Holy Cross

Shapiro earned a two-run RBI double in the loss.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 17-6, to the College of Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Graduate student Collin Shapiro recorded a two-run RBI double on the day, before reaching home with an unearned run on an error.   
 
Shapiro led the team with two RBIs on the afternoon, while Aidan Wilde and Kevin Skagerlind followed with one RBI apiece. Cole Hebble tallied a team best two hits, with Shapiro, Wilde, Skagerlind, Dylan Judd and Drew DeMartino all totaling one each. Shapiro, Skagerlind, Judd, Wilde and Cole all had a registered a double.
 
Holy Cross jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, before adding three more runs in the top of the third. At the bottom of the third inning, UMass cut the deficit in half, making it a 6-3 contest. After a single from Hebble, Ryan Coleman reached first on an error, advancing Hebble to second. Shapiro smacked a double that sent Hebble and Coleman home. On a throwing error by Holy Cross' catcher to third, Shapiro ran home.
 
In the bottom of the fourth frame, Massachusetts notched two more runs scored. Judd came across the plate on an RBI double from Wilde before Wilde advanced to scoring position on Hebble's ground out to third. Wilde scored an unearned run for the Minutemen on a passed ball and made it 6-5 to end the inning.
 
The Crusaders collected one run in the fifth to push ahead 7-5, before a seven-run sixth frame allowed Holy Cross to take a 14-5 lead. In the seventh, Holy Cross added two more runs to its total, extending its lead to 16-5.
 
At the bottom of the seventh inning, UMass picked up one last run in the game, on a double from Skagerlind that saw Nolan Tichy touch home plate, but it was not enough, as the Crusaders earned another run, bringing the contest to its final score of 17-6.
 
Matt Aronson (0-1) picked up the loss for the Minutemen, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing six runs, six hits, three walks and striking out four. UMass saw six more pitchers on the mound throughout the game. Sean Scanlon took the win for the Crusaders, giving up five runs on five hits, one walk and earning two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
 
Massachusetts hits the road to take on Towson for a three-game weekend series on Friday, March 25 through Sunday, March 27, in Towson, Maryland. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m. The two teams close out the match up on Sunday at 12 p.m.
