Baseball Takes Series Finale With 7-2 Win At Fairleigh Dickinson

March 19, 2022 | Baseball

Hebble highlights three-run fifth inning with two-run home run.

TEANECK, N.J. – University of Massachusetts baseball secured a 7-2 victory in the series finale at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Saturday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. A three-run fifth inning headlined the day for the Minutemen, highlighted by a two-run home run from graduate student Cole Hebble.

Hebble went two-for-three, adding a double, and accumulating a team-high three RBIs and two runs.  Along with Hebble, Aidan Wilde and Steve Luttazi both contributed a long ball in the triumph. Wilde also had two runs, while Luttazi, Dylan Judd and Ryan Coleman registered one apiece.

With two outs at the top of the second, Wilde hit one over the fence to give Minutemen an early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless third inning, the Knights were able to knot the game up at 1-1 on a sacrifice hit.

Judd started off the fifth inning with a walk, before advancing to second as Wilde reached first on an error. Both Judd and Wilde advance on a wild pitch with Will MacLean up in the rotation. MacLean hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Judd to tag up and come across home plate. With a new pitcher in for Fairleigh Dickinson, Hebble came up to bat, sailing the ball out of the park, bringing home him and Wilde.

UMass added another tally in the sixth, as Luttazi recorded his third home run of the season, making it a 5-1 contest. In the seventh frame, Massachusetts scored two more runs, extending its lead, 7-1. Coleman touched home off a double to left field from Hebble, while Hebble had an unearned run on a muffed throw by FDU's third baseman.

The Knights notched one more run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Minutemen were able to hold off FDU and come out on top.

Daniel Livnat (1-1) received the win on the afternoon, going 5.2 innings, and allowing one run on five hits, one walk and striking out five. Zack Given pitched for 3.1 frames, only giving up one run on three hits, one walk and had two strike outs. For Fairleigh Dickinson, Jude Baxt took the loss, allowing three runs, two hits, two walks and recording no strikeouts, before being relieved after 3.2 innings.

Massachusetts hosts Holy Cross on Tuesday, March 22, for its home opener at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
