Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Fairleigh Dickinson

Minutemen secures 5-2 game one win and looks for a victory in the series finale.
TEANECK, N.J. – University of Massachusetts baseball took game one, 5-2, from Fairleigh Dickinson University, before coming up short, 5-4, in game two at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Friday.
UMass will look to secure a series victory in the final matchup with the Knights. The two teams will wrap up the series on either Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m., or play on Sunday, March 20, at 12 p.m.
Game 1
Massachusetts 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 2 (9 innings)
Aidan Wilde recorded his third home run of his career late in the second inning to make it a 1-0 game, before Drew DeMartino registered his first long ball as a Minutemen in the sixth frame, bringing in two runs. Three Minutemen registered doubles on the day, including Cole Hebble, who had two hits.
Wilde's homer put Massachusetts on the board first. After going three innings scoreless, Mike Gervasi hit a single in the sixth inning, before DeMartino stepped up to the plate. DeMartino smacked the ball out of the park, bringing him and Gervasi around.
The seventh inning saw UMass hit back-to-back-to-back doubles and add two more runs to its tally. Hebble hit a double first for the Minutemen before Ryan Coleman contributed an RBI double. Coleman crossed home plate after Collin Shapiro knocked the ball to left field to collect two bases, to make it a 5-0 game. Fairleigh Dickinson totaled two runs in the bottom of the inning off back-to-back RBI singles. UMass defense held off the Knights for the final two frames to come away with the 5-2 triumph.
Kevin Dow (2-1) got the start and the win for Massachusetts. The senior captain went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, no walks and struck out four. Zach Clevenger came in for the final 2.2 frames, giving up one hit and striking out three batters. Nick Evangelista took the loss for FDU, throwing seven innings.
Game 2
Fairleigh Dickinson 5, Massachusetts 4 (7 innings)
Three Minutemen recorded home runs in game two, while Wilde contributed a double. Shapiro and Steve Luttazi had two hits apiece, as DeMartino, Judd, Wilde and MacLean led with one RBI each, all on one hit.
DeMartino opened the second inning of game two with a long ball to make it a quick 1-0 contest. Luttazi reached first on his at bat off after being walked, before Wilde doubled to left field, sending Luttazi home to make it 2-0.
In the sixth inning, the Knights tallied five runs with two unearned. UMass notched two more runs in the seventh and final frame, as Dylan Judd hit his first home run of the season and Will MacLean earned his first collegiate homer. The Minutemen's rally fell short after UMass lined out and grounded out to end the game.
Jack Steele (1-2) had the loss for UMass, allowing three runs on as many hits, no walks and striking out eight in 5.2 innings of work. Jack Pawloski entered the contest for 0.1 inning, giving up two runs and walking three. Joey Kosowsky of FDU earned the win, pitching 6.1 innings.
