Penn State Takes Series Opener From Baseball, 10-6

March 11, 2022 | Baseball

The Minutemen take on the Nittany Lions on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m.

CARY, N.C. – Penn State scored seven runs in the fifth inning to build a lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team could not answer, as the Minutemen fell, 10-6, on Friday afternoon at Coleman Field at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

Mike Gervasi went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Cole Hebble had a double. Aidan Wilde registered one hit on the day and three RBIs.

A double for the Nittany Lions late in the third inning, brought across a run, before back-to-back singles allowed Penn State to advance its runners home and have a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth frame, UMass was able to bring the game to a 3-3 draw. With the bases loaded, Nolan Tichy was walked, sending Hebble home to get UMass on the board. Wilde singled to left center, advancing Gervasi home, while Dylan Judd rounded third and headed home, knotting it up a three apiece. The bottom of the fifth saw Penn State score seven runs, including a double that knocked in three RBIs.

Massachusetts secured three more runs in the sixth inning, all off balls on base with bases loaded, to close the gap to four, but it was not enough for the Minutemen to comeback.

Kevin Dow got the loss (1-1) as the senior went four innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, two walks and striking out six. Max LeBlanc came out of the bullpen, giving up six runs on two hits and walking four, while Blake Bennett closed out the contest, pitching four frames, walking one and had one hit, with five strikeouts. Tyler Shingledecker of Penn State earned the win with a 0.1 inning save.

Massachusetts will be back in action against Penn State for game two of the weekend series in Cary, North Carolina, at the USA Baseball Training Complex on Saturday, March 12. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
