November 23, 2019 | Men's Basketball
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Three players reached double figures against the NCAA's top defensive team as the UMass basketball team (5-1) went into halftime down five before trimming the deficit to as little as three against defending national champion No. 7/6 Virginia (5-0), but a 12-2 Cavalier run midway through the second half sent UVA past the Minutemen on Saturday afternoon, 58-46, at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Carl Pierre led the way with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting for a Massachusetts team that shot 15-of-50 from the floor (30%) and 5-of-26 from three. T.J. Weeks had 12 points off the bench, Tre Mitchell contributed 10 points and four boards and Samba Diallo added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Minutemen will take on St. John's on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament.
Braxton Key led three Virginia players in double figures with 16 points (7-of-11) and six assists, and was helped along the way by Kihei Clark (14 points) and Jay Huff (10 points).
After UMass came out of the break with a jumper from Pierre to make it a 29-26 game, the Virginia defense held the Minutemen without a field goal for 14 minutes despite several good looks from the Massachusetts offense. In that time, the Cavaliers extended the advantage to 49-33, its largest lead of the night.
The nation's toughest defense lived up to the hype early in the first half, with the Cavaliers holding UMass to 4-of-16 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, allowing Virginia to lead by as many as 16 thanks to 11 points from Key.
The Minutemen, though, closed the half on an 11-0 run to make it 29-24 at the break after three straight layups from Mitchell to make, the most first half points allowed by Virginia this season.
