Whipple enters 11th overall season coaching program in 2018

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced the extension of football head coach Mark Whipple's contract through the 2020 season on Monday. Whipple is in his fifth season coaching the program at the NCAA Division I FBS level in 2018 and his 11th year overall as the leader of the team, including six when the Minutemen competed at the NCAA Division I-AA level from 1998-2003.

"We are pleased to extend Coach Whipple's contract at UMass and look forward to his leadership of our program in 2018 and beyond," Bamford said. "Mark is a true Minuteman having served our program as head coach in two different eras, for a combined 10 years. He has guided our young FBS program through some challenging times the last four years but has positioned us well for our future."

Whipple, who led UMass to the 1998 NCAA I-AA National Championship, is the program's all-time wins leader. Whipple surpassed Vic Fusia's 59 accrued from 1961-70 at Fenway Park during the 2017 season with the team's 44-31 triumph over Maine on Nov. 11.

"I am excited about the future of this University of Massachusetts football program and especially the young men we have in our program," Whipple said.

Known for offensive success at the collegiate and NFL levels, Whipple's Minuteman squads rank among the most successful on the ground and through the air during his two tenures as the University of Massachusetts head coach. Teams led by Whipple currently hold more than 150 spots in the program's various top-10 single-season rankings for success on offense, including the No. 1 overall ranking in 21 categories.

Whipple begins his 11th season as the UMass football head coach against Duquesne at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sat., Aug. 25. Season ticket packages covering the five contests at McGuirk Alumni Stadium and one game at Gillette Stadium are available now.
