April 13, 2018 | Football

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football hosted the team's annual spring game on Friday, with Team White posting a 29-26 intrasquad victory over Team Maroon at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Team White was guest-coached by UMass football alumnus Denis Gagnon (1969-71) who still ranks among the program's all-time leaders in eight individual season and career kicking records. Longtime ESPN anchor Chris Berman returned for the second consecutive year and led the Maroon side.

Randall West (12-for-16) paced Team White with 235 passing yards and four touchdowns and Jessie Britt contributed 100 all-purposes yards, including 70 receiving yards and a touchdown. Brennon Dingle had five catches for 105 yards and was on the receiving end of West's game-winning touchdown pass with six minutes, six seconds remaining in the contest.

For Team Maroon, Michael Curtis went 5-for-7 in the air for 66 yards and had one touchdown pass while also collecting 59 yards on six carries. Marquis Young paced the group with 101 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and Jovohn Tucker made four catches for 53 yards.

Team White opened up the night with 21 of the game's first 28 points. Late in the first quarter and on fourth-and-eight, West aired a 25-yard strike to Sadiq Palmer to build a 7-0 lead. On the first play of the second stanza West found Taylor Edwards for a 10-yard touchdown, then with 50 seconds remaining Britt reeled in a five-yard pass from the redshirt junior quarterback.

Sandwiched between Team White's second quarter scores was a five-yard scamper by Young into the end zone. As time expired before halftime, Mike Caggiano nailed a 42-yard field goal for Team Maroon, sending the sides into the locker room with Team White holding a 21-10 advantage.

Team Maroon would continue the rally effort into the second half and even claimed a 26-21 lead with 7:52 remaining in the game. In the third quarter Curtis hooked up with Avien Peah for a 1-yard touchdown reception, before Caggiano drained a 33-yard field goal and Tucker ran 11 yards into the end zone, giving his squad the five-point cushion.

On the ensuing Team White drive, West dealt the game-winning 30-yard pass to Dingle before Kyle Horn caught his pass on the two-point conversion attempt, bringing the game to its final score of 29-26.

Defensively, James Bowe, Jr. turned in a game-high 12 tackles for Team White while Chinedu Ogbonna forced one fumble and came up with a recovery. Brice McAllister had six stops plus a 10-yard sack.
