Football duo recognized for academic success
IRVING, Texas - University of Massachusetts football seniors Nick Berus and Andrew Libby received recognition as National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society members following the completion of their collegiate careers, as announced by the NFF on Wednesday. Berus served as the team's long-snapper for each of the last four seasons while Libby filled a variety of roles during his four seasons, including fullback, holder and as a member of the kickoff and punt coverage units.
To earn 2018 NFF Hampshire Honor Society status, members must have completed or forgone their final year of playing eligibility to pursue professional playing opportunities in 2017, achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study and met all NCAA or NAIA mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Berus held the role of the team's top long-snapper on punts and field goals for each of the last four seasons. He helped fellow redshirt senior Logan Laurent achieve a career year in 2017, as Laurent won Phil Steele All-Independent First Team (Kicker), NEFWA All-New England (Kicker/Punter) and All-ECAC Second Team (Kicker) following the season. Berus holds a bachelor's of science degree in food science and is studying for a master's of science degree in food science.
Libby appeared in all 12 games as a member of the special teams unit during 2017, serving as the team's holder while also playing on punt and kickoff coverage and return. It marked his fourth consecutive season as a contributor for the Minutemen as he appeared in 46 of a possible 48 games, including each during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Libby will graduate with a bachelor's of science degree in landscape architecture.
Together with Berus' long-snap, Libby held for Laurent's game-tying 45-yard conversion with five seconds to play and on the 36-yard double-overtime game-winning kick against Appalachian State (10/28) during the 2017 campaign.
Recent UMass recipients of the Hampshire Honor Society accolade include Joe Colton, Blake Frohnapfel and Matt Sparks in 2016 and Fabian Hoeller in 2017.
