UMass Takes Two To Complete Sweep Of George Washington

UMass racked up 26 hits in the doubleheader, capping off the weekend with a 15-0 win in game two today.

WASHINGTON, D.C. The University of Massachusetts softball team swept their second Atlantic 10 opponent as they took both games in a Saturday doubleheader from George Washington, taking game one 8-2 before going on to pick up a 15-0 win in five-innings to cap off the weekend. The Minutewomen (17-10 Overall, 6-0 Atlantic 10) won their sixth and seven consecutive games as they posted double-digit hits in both contests, having done so in each of the last seven outings.
 
Game One – UMass 8, GW 2 - Box Score
Hannah Bunker opened the scoring in the second inning of game one with with a RBI single to center field with two strikes and two outs before GW (22-11 Overall, 2-4 Atlantic 10) plated their only runs of the game in the third inning to go ahead 2-1.
 
Kiara Oliver moved to 9-2 on the season as the freshman tossed 6.0 innings, shutting down GW's offense by allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out five. Quinn Breidenbach closed out the game in the seventh inning with a one, two, three inning to secure the win.
 
UMass answered back quickly with a five-run inning in their next showing at the plate to go ahead 6-2 after four complete innings. Kaitlyn Stavinoha drove in the tying run on a single to left center field to bring in Riley Gregoire to start the scoring off with one of her two hits.
 
Jackie Kelley went 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored, picking up her first RBI of the game with a two-out double to drive in Hannah Bunker to give UMass the lead back. The freshman lefty extended her hitting streak and RBI streak to six games, racking up 12 RBI during the span.
 
Erin Stacevicz took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity after Jena Cozza was intentionally walked with two outs, singling to right field for the third and fourth runs of the inning. Kaycee Carbone's first of two hits drove in the fifth and final run of the fourth inning with a RBI single to center field that scored Cozza.
 
The offense stayed hot in the following frame, adding another pair of runs facing two outs. Kelley's two RBI triple to right center field cleared the bases and scored Bunker and Amy Smith for the final runs of the afternoon, giving UMass an 8-2 cushion heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning.
 
Game Two – UMass 15, GW 0 (5 innings) - Box Score
UMass kept the bats going in game two as they scored five runs on five hits in the opening two innings to go ahead 5-0 on their way to racking up 14 hits. Melissa Garcia led the offense in the second game of the doubleheader, going 4-of-4 at the plate with five RBI. Garcia's first RBI of the game came in the first inning as the junior brought in Stacevicz from third on a single down the right field line.
 
Smith got things going in the second inning with a base hit after a Stavinoha walk followed by a Bunker walk that put a pair on for Cozza, who came through with a single to right to score the first of four runs before a Stacevicz sacrifice fly in foul territory put UMass up 3-0.
 
Garcia added two RBI to her game total with two outs and a double down the left field line to extend the lead to 5-0. She came through once again in her third plate appearance, picking up her third hit on a RBI single to right that brought in Carbone, who opened the inning with a leadoff triple. Bunker added the second and final run of the fourth, scoring Madison Gimpl from third on a ball sent to center field to bring the count to 7-0.
 
UMass capped off the afternoon with an eight-run fifth inning, beginning with a Garcia's fifth RBI and fourth hit to score Cozza. The Minutewomen kept their foot on the gas as Smith drove in a single run before Bunker added two of her three RBI to put UMass ahead 11-0.
 
Cozza moved into a tie for third-most home runs all-time at UMass with two outs in the inning, sending a grand slam shot to center field for her second long ball of the weekend and 11th of the season. The senior tied Samantha Salato (2006-09) with her 32nd career home run and now needs just one more to move into a tie for second-most.
 
Meg Colleran allowed just one hit through her first three innings of work, picking up nine outs after facing nine batters thanks to a double play in the bottom of the second inning. Colleran won her sixth game of the season to improve to 6-4 in the circle during her senior campaign as she finished with three strikeouts while allowing just two hits in four innings.
 
The Minutewomen will return home for a midweek matchup against UAlbany, beginning on Wednesday at 2 p.m. on Sortino Field.
