Minutewomen Split Opening Day Doubleheader, Shutout Southern Miss

February 09, 2018 | Softball

Kiara Oliver tossed seven innings of scoreless softball with eight strikeouts and no walks in the win.

BATON ROUGE, La. Jena Cozza and Hannah Bunker each picked up a pair of RBIs as the University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Southern Miss 4-0 to split a pair of games on the opening day of the Tiger Classic. The Minutewomen (1-1 Overall) dropped the opening game of the season to Syracuse 4-0 before bouncing back to defeat the Golden Eagles in game two behind seven scoreless innings from Kiara Oliver.

Game One – Syracuse 4, UMass 0 (Box Score)
The Minutewomen picked up four of their five hits to leadoff innings, beginning with an Erin Stacevicz in the first inning on a bunt single just in front of the plate. UMass put runners on to open the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as well while Cozza, Madison Gimpl and Jackie Kelley each picked up leadoff hits.

Cozza's hit to open up the third inning moved the senior infielder all the way over to third base on a single to right field followed by an error that allowed her to reach third before she was left stranded on three consecutive outs.

Kaycee Carbone added a hit for the Minutewomen on a 1-3 showing at the plate with a one-out single to center field after fighting off multiple pitches with two strikes.

Syracuse scored a run in each of their first two innings, beginning with a fielder's choice RBI by Neli Casares-Maher with one out in the first inning. The Orange plated their second in the following frame to go ahead 2-0.

Meg Colleran settled into the circle after surrendering two runs in the opening two innings as the senior held Syracuse without another hit until the fifth inning. Colleran allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings of work on 108 pitches before being replaced in the circle by Quinn Breidenbach in the top half of the fifth as Syracuse brought in two more runs to go ahead 4-0. Breidenbach tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless softball with a strikeout and no hits allowed.

Game Two – UMass 4, Southern Miss 0 (Box Score)
UMass plated four runs in the top of the third inning in their second game of the day to go up 4-0 over Southern Miss on five hits and an error. Alyssa Lyon reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second before a Jackie Kelley sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position with one out. Stacevicz followed with an infield single of her own, beating out the throw to first for her second hit of the game and third of the afternoon.

Bunker's first collegiate hit drove in a pair of runs with one out in the frame as the freshman doubled down the left field line to bring in a pair of runs and put UMass ahead early 2-0.

The offense kept it going as Cozza drove in two more in the very next at-bat with a single to right field to score Bunker and Stacevicz while putting UMass up 4-0. Cozza finished the game with a pair of hits to bring her total for the day to three.

Oliver earned her first collegiate win in the circle in her first start and appearance as the right-hander threw seven innings of scoreless softball. Oliver struck out eight batters while allowing three hits with no walks on her way to the complete game shutout.

Play at the Tiger Classic will continue into tomorrow as the Minutewomen open the day against UT-Arlington at 10:30 a.m. before taking on host and No. 8-ranked LSU at 6 p.m.
