Football Falls 38-28 On The Road At Coastal Carolina

Chanticleers pull away late, use ground game in win over Minutemen.
The loss drops UMass to 0-2 on the year, while Coastal Carolina improved to 1-0 in its first game as a Football Bowl Subdivision program. The Minutemen will return home to McGuirk Alumni Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 9 to host Old Dominion (3:30 PM).
Andrew Ford went over the 3,000-yard passing mark in his time at UMass with 316 yards in the game on 25-of-41 attempts. His lone touchdown pass came to Andy Isabella who had 101 yards receiving. Adam Breneman led all receivers with 126 yards in the game on nine catches giving him 1,000 yards in his two seasons with the Minutemen.
Though the UMass ground game was held largely in check on the night, Marquis Young did have a pair of short touchdown scampers finishing the game with 12 carries for 40 yards.
Coastal Carolina was led on the ground by Osharmar Abercrombie who had 149 yards on 17 carries alongside two touchdowns. Quarterback Dalton Demos, part of a planned rotation by the Chanticleers, also had two early rushing touchdowns in the game.
The rushing attack allowed CCU to hold a nearly 10 minute advantage in time of possession for the game. UMass managed 79 rushing yards on 26 attempts.
Coastal opened the scoring on its second drive of the night after recovering a UMass fumble. The Minutemen answered on the ensuing drive, but the Chanticleers closed the first quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run by Dalton.
A 21-yard toss from Ford to Isabella in the second quarter tied the game, but Coastal took a 21-14 lead into halftime on a four-yard run by Abercrombie.
UMass increased the offensive tempo in the third quarter on a nine-play, 79-yard drive that tied the game, 21-21, when Ford ran the ball in from nine yards out.
Coastal then scored a field goal on the next possession and forced punts on the next two UMass possessions. The Chanticleers then took a 31-21 lead at the 4:48 mark of the third when Chris Jones slide to catch a touchdown pass by Tyler Keane.
The Minutemen missed a field goal early in the fourth. The Chanticleers then made it a 17-point contest on a seven-yard run by Abercrombie with 3:45 to go. UMass' Young scored late on a one-yard dive to give the final score.
