August 26, 2017 | Football

Rainbow Warriors score 17 points in fourth quarter to rally from behind

AMHERST, Mass. - A 17-point fourth quarter helped Hawai'i rally back in a 38-35 win over the University of Massachusetts football team in the season-opener for both at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday night. After the Minutemen took a 35-28 lead early in the fourth, the Rainbow Warriors used a field goal and the go-ahead touchdown with 48 seconds remaining to secure the win.

UMass (0-1) will head to Coastal Carolina next on Sat., Sept. 2 for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Conway, South Carolina.

Andrew Ford was 21-of-30 for the Minutemen for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Nine of those completions went to AdamĀ Breneman,Ā who had 179 yards on the night - Ā the third-most yards in a single-game for a UMass tight end. BrenemanĀ now has 1,173 career receiving yards between his time at Penn State and UMass.

Andy Isabella accounted for a pair of touchdowns, one in the air and one on the ground, while MalikĀ Lee had a three-yard touchdown reception for his first career score. Marquis Young led the ground game with 83 yards on 20 carries for two touchdowns.

Defensively, Bryton Barr paced the Minutemen with 13 tackles and a sack, while Isaiah Rodgers had an interception and six tackles.

Dru Brown led Hawai'i with 391 yards through the air completing 25-of-38 attempts for three touchdowns. John UrsuaĀ hauled in 12 receptions for a game-high 272 yards. The Rainbow Warriors were led defensively by JahlaniĀ TavaiĀ who had 13 tackles and two sacks.

Hawai'i scored the opening touchdown of the game before Isabella was able to tie the game 7-7 on a six-yard end-around to cap a 76-yard drive with six minutes left in the first quarter.

The teams traded scores again in the second half with UMass tying the game 14-14 with two seconds to go before halftime. It was Isabella again in short yardage as he caught a two-yard pass from Ford closing out a 63-yard drive.

UMass came out of halftime with momentum seeing Young score on a one-yard plunge and then Ford finding Lee in the left flat putting the Minutemen up 28-14 with 4:35 left in the third.

Hawai'i was able to get a score back just over two minutes later and converted a UMass fumble at its own 15-yard line into another score early in the fourth to tie game at 28 each.

On a fourth-and-one play, Young then broke through traffic for a 21-yard touchdown scamper with 11:41 to go in the fourth putting UMass back up 35-28.

The Rainbow Warriors scored a field goal on the ensuing drive and then forced a UMass punt. Hawai'i put together and eight-play, 73 yard drive sparked by a 52-yard reception and run by Ursua. Brown hit Metuisela UngaĀ with a seven-yard TD pass to put Hawai'i up 38-35.
