Matt Reynolds Named Head Baseball Coach

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced the hiring of letterwinner and alum Matt Reynolds as head baseball coach, the 15th skipper in program history, on Friday.
"I am pleased to welcome Matt Reynolds back to Amherst and the University of Massachusetts," Bamford said. "Matt comes highly regarded from his coaching peers, UMass teammates and those who have followed his career closely at UMass, Navy and Washington College. Matt is a tireless recruiter who has positively connected with the young men in every program he has been associated with during his career."
Reynolds returns to Amherst after a three-year stint as head coach at Washington College (2014-17) in Chestertown, Maryland, and seven seasons as an assistant coach at Navy (2007-14). In his first season as head coach, he guided the Shoremen to their first winning record in three years (19-15). He followed that performance up with a 26-win effort in 2016, the team's second-highest win total ever.

"I am humbled and honored to take the reins, particularly following the retirement of a man that has given so much to UMass baseball, to me, and to countless other alumni, Coach Mike Stone. I would like to thank Ryan Bamford for putting his trust in me to be the next head coach of the Minutemen. I would also like to thank my wife, Alex, my extended family, friends and colleagues for their support that led me to this day. I am excited to get back to Amherst and get to work."
Reynolds spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he focused on hitting, infield and outfield defense and coached third base. He coached a Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a Patriot League Player of the Year and a number of All-Patriot League players and Major League Baseball draft picks.
With Reynolds providing hitting instruction, the Midshipmen set a number of offensive team records and top 10 all-time team totals during his tenure. In his first season, the Midshipmen broke school records for hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases.
Reynolds, while maintaining full-time coaching responsibilities, served as an active duty Commissioned Officer and Physical Education Instructor at the Naval Academy. He stood as the Physical Education Duty Officer, opening and securing Physical Education buildings and remaining on-call on a bi-weekly basis to respond to any facility issues. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties as an instructor and coach.
Reynolds served as a graduate assistant under Stone at UMass for three seasons (2005-07). He worked with infielders and hitters while assisting with recruiting. He played his final two collegiate seasons in Amherst after transferring from the University of Maine. He earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors in 2003 and was named the Minutemen's Most Valuable Player the following season.
A native of South Boston, Massachusetts, Reynolds holds bachelor's (communication, 2005) and master's (education technology, 2010) degrees from UMass.
