Meg Colleran Leads League Softball Honors

AMHERST, Mass. Led by junior Meg Colleran, University of Massachusetts softball saw five of its student-athletes honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference on Wednesday.
 
Earning first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors for the second time in her career, right hander Colleran (North Attleboro, Mass.) made 25 starts and 31 appearances, posting a record of 17-12 overall and 10-4 in conference play. She threw three shutouts and 18 complete games for a total of 166.1 innings pitched. Colleran posted a .274 overall ERA with a 2.21 ERA in league action. She struck out 101 batters while only walking 33. Among league hurlers, she ranks No. 5 in opposing batting average (.233) and No. 2 in wins (17).
 
An Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection in 2016, sophomore Kaycee Carbone (Hudson, N.H.) earned second-team all-league honors at second base. She started 47 games, missing just one non-conference contest in 2017. Her three home runs rank No. 2 on the team. Carbone is batting .299 with 41 hits, including three doubles, and 17 RBI (No. 2 on the squad). She's scored 20 runs and is 4-for-4 in stolen bases. In the field, she had 86 putouts and 99 assists for a .969 fielding percentage.
 
Carbone was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. She holds a 3.891 GPA as a biology major. She's a three-time member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioners' Honor Roll and was named a 2016 NFCA Scholar-Athlete. Carbone is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the Executive Board for 2017-18.
 
An Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection in 2016, sophomore Erin Stacevicz (Cedar Grove, N.J.) earned second-team all-league honors at center field. She started all 48 games and was the lead-off batter in 47-of-48 games. Her .331 batting average ranks third on the team and her 34 runs scored leads the team. In 166 at-bats, she posted 55 hits, including four doubles and two triple, with 12 RBI and is 18-of-22 in stolen bases. In the field, she's made 51 putouts and four assists for a fielding percentage of .965.
 
Named to the 2014 A-10 All-Rookie Team, senior Tara Klee (Hamburg, Pa.) earned second-team all-league honors at right field. She started 46 and played in 47 games: 42 in right field, one in left field and three as designated hitter. She has seven multi-hit-games and hit a grand slam to defeat then-top-ranked Fordham on April 15. Klee is batting .218 with 29 hits, including 11 doubles, and 16 RBI with eight runs scored.
 
Freshman Candace Denis (Malakoff, Texas) was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. She played in all 48 games, making starts at pitcher (18), second base (1), third base (8), short stop (7), left field (7), right field (2) and as the designated hitter (6). In the circle, she posted a record of 8-8 with an ERA of 3.02. Denis made 18 starts, threw 13 complete games and struck out 99 batters. She ranks No. 3 in the league in opposing batting average (.221) and No. 2 among rookies.
 
At the plate, Denis is batting .295 with 43 hits, 31 runs scored and 12 RBI. She leads the team in stolen bases, going 24-for-27 while ranking No. 3 in the conference and leading all rookies in stolen bases. She has eight multi-hit games.
 
The Minutewomen (26-22, 13-6 Atlantic 10), as the No. 2 seed, will compete at the Atlantic 10 Championship this week in Fairfax, Virginia. Hosted by George Mason, UMass received a first-round bye and will play the winner of No. 3 Saint Joseph's and No. 6 George Mason on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
 
Massachusetts has collected 26 wins for the second-straight season. After starting 3-14, UMass finished the season 23-8 (since March 11) and won six of its seven Atlantic 10 series. The Minutewomen combined for a .272 batting average and a 3.15 ERA overall with improved averages of .315 and 3.07, respectively, in conference play.
