Graduate student tight end ranks among nation's leaders in receptions and receiving yards per game

NEW YORK - University of Massachusetts graduate student tight end Adam Breneman was one of only eight student-athletes named a John Mackey Award Semifinalist, as announced by the Friends of John Mackey on Tuesday. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the 2017 John Mackey Award recipient will be announced on Dec. 6, 2017 and presented live on Dec. 7, 2017 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show at 6:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

The eight semifinalists were selected by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. It marks Breneman second consecutive season earning a spot as a semifinalist.

Breneman is second in the nation among tight ends for receiving yards with 685 over nine games played (76.1 per game) and also second in receptions (54) and catches per game (6.0). His 76.1 receiving yards per game rank as the most by a tight end and the 46th-highest total in the nation. He has three games of 100 or more yards this season and also posted nine or more catches on three occasions. Nationally lauded for his work on and off the field, Breneman is a Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Semifinalist and appeared on six all-America listings this year: Athlon Sports (Midseason & Preseason), CBS Sports (Midseason), PFF (Midseason), USA TODAY (Preseason) and Bleacher Report (Preseason).

NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
