Laurent's Double Overtime Field Goal Seals UMass Football Victory
October 28, 2017 | Football
Redshirt senior kicker hits tying field goal in final seconds of regulation, wins it with 36-yard conversion
Marquis Young ran for 132 yards on 15 carries (8.8 per rush) with a pair of touchdowns, including a score during the first overtime period. It was his second consecutive game with 100 or more rushing yards and the ninth game of his career with triple digits.
After Laurent's game-tying field goal from 45 yards out sailed through the uprights, UMass took the field on offense for the first overtime. In a 2nd-and-7 situation, Young bounced outside, raced around the right side of the offensive lineĀ and found the edge en route to the endzone.
After Young's second touchdown of the night gave UMass a 27-20 advantage, Appalachian State answered. Taylor Lamb, who finished 14-of-28 for 133 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, lofted a right-corner strike to Ike Lewis and ChandlerĀ Staton punched through the extra point as the Mountaineers evened the game at 27-all.
Appalachian State took possession on offense first during the second overtime, but UMass defensive tackle Ali Ali-Musa ended the Mountaineers' drive on its first play when Ali-Musa forced a fumble middle linebacker Bryton Barr dropped on top of for possession.
With the UMass offense back on the field and any score deciding the outcome of the game, Young collected seven yards on the groundĀ over three carries and set Laurent up for his 36-yard game-winner. Laurent calmly stepped onto the field, lined up his kick and sent it zooming through the uprights before celebrating with a backflip.
Andrew Ford started at quarterback and was 9-of-12 for 110 yards with one interception before he left the game due to injury. Ross Comis stepped under center and finished the game 11-of-20 for 80 yards while he added 48 yards on the ground. ComisĀ also had a statistical rarity as he caught his own pass for an eight yard gain when an Appalachian State player batted an attempt up into the air that ComisĀ caught on the way down.
Massachusetts led at half, 17-14, via a Nick Orekoya one yard touchdown run, Laurent's 47-yard field goal and a 95-yard burst down the UMass sideline by Young. However, Staton tied the game at 17-all with his 40-yard third quarter field goal before he gave Appalachian State its first lead of the nightĀ with his 30-yard make with four minutes, 42 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
Three possessions after StatonĀ gave Appalachian State the lead, Comis and the Massachusetts offense stepped onto the field for their final drive of regulation with 1:50 left on the McGuirk Alumni Stadium scoreboard and 80 yards in front of them.
Comis found Andy Isabella on three consecutive first down plays that helped move the ball to the UMass 46 yard line. Six plays later, the drive stalled at the Appalachian State 27 yard line after a 3rd-and-10 endzone look from Comis to Adam Breneman was too long, which set up Laurent's heroics.
The overtime turnover combo of Ali-Musa and Barr doubles as the team's top tacklers. Barr led the Minutemen and tied for the game high with 15 stops while Ali-Musa added 10. Da'Sean Downey posted a career-high-tying 4.0 TFLs (14 yards lost), evening the mark he set against Georgia Southern one game earlier in the season.
Isabella (55 yards) was the top receiver for the Minutemen with seven grabs while Sadiq Palmer had four covering 80 yards.
The season continues for Massachusetts football at Mississippi State on Sat., Nov. 4 with a Noon (ET) kickoff. Follow the team on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at @UMassFootball.
