AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball announced its 2016-17 non-conference schedule on Friday, highlighted by a new series with long-time rival and former Atlantic 10 Conference opponent Temple. Included in the announcement are key matchups scheduled for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
"We are excited about restarting our rivalry with Temple, our non-conference opposition this year and extending our series with Harvard and Providence in the upcoming seasons," head coach Derek Kellogg said. "We are a young team in 2016-17 and I believe having these nine non-conference home games – combined with taking on tough teams like Temple, Harvard, Ole Miss and Providence – will serve us well as we prepare for the always-competitive Atlantic 10 portion of our season."
Highlights
UMass and Temple renew a long-running rivalry with a Nov. 17, 2016 game at the Mullins Center. It's the first meeting between the teams since Temple departed the Atlantic 10 after the 2012-13 season and the 65th all-time matchup. The game will include a "Throwback Thursday" theme, reminiscing on the 1990s-era UMass vs. Temple classics. The UMass-Temple series includes a return trip to the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the 2018-19 season.
The Minutemen have also extended the current series with regional foes Harvard and Providence. The additions include home games vs. Providence (2017-18) and Harvard (2018-19) with road trips to the Crimson (2017-18) and Friars (2018-19).
Key SEC matchups have been added with Georgia and South Carolina in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The Bulldogs will play the Minutemen in a home game in 2017-18 as UMass will travel to Athens, Georgia, the following season. Massachusetts will play at South Carolina in 2017-18 with the Gamecocks making the return trip in 2018-19.
Additionally, in 2017-18, UMass will compete in the Barclays Center Classic (Brooklyn, New York), alongside Alabama and BYU, during Thanksgiving week. In 2019-20, the Minutemen will participate in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tipoff. More information will be released at a later date.
In 2016-17, the Maroon and White will continue to challenge major-conference opposition with games against Ole Miss and Providence. UMass will face the Rebels, in Oxford, Mississippi, on Nov. 14 and travels to Providence, Rhode Island, for a Dec. 10 tilt with the Friars.
The 2016-17 non-conference schedule includes nine home games in the Mullins Center with four in November and five in December. Coupled with the nine-game Atlantic 10 home schedule, UMass will play 18 contests in the Mullins Center, tied for the most in program history (2010-11).
As previously announced, UMass will face Holy Cross, at Worcester's DCU Center, on Nov. 20 for a 1;05 p.m. tip. The Crusaders will make trips to Amherst in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
