AMHERST, Mass. - Five Eagles scored in double-figures led by Sean Marshall's 19 points as Boston College defeated the University of Massachusetts (6-2), 84-73, in the sold-out Leaman Legacy Classic. The Minutemen were led by senior Stephane Lasme's (Libreville, Gabon) 24 points and Rashaun Freeman's (Schenectady, N.Y.) 16 points, but a tough shooting night from behind the three-point line (4-for-22) hurt UMass' efforts. The Eagles (4-2) shot 52 percent for the night and went 29-for-38 from the free throw line in the win.
Saturday's match-up was the first sellout (9,493) in the Mullins Center since Feb. 17, 2001 against Temple.
UMass trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half but rallied back in the final 5:26 to cut the lead to eight, 81-73, with 45 seconds on a Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) three pointer.
Freeman's 16 points moved him ahead of Marcus Camby and Edwin Green on the UMass career scoring list into 10th place. Freeman now has 1,394 career points.
For Boston College, Sean Williams scored 16 points, Jared Dudley added 11, and Tyrese Rice chipped in 17, and Shamari Spears tallied 12 points to round out the Eagles scoring. BC shot 26-for-50 from the field and received 19 points from its bench compared to just four for UMass.
Lasme shot 8-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line scoring his career-high mark of 24 points. He also hauled in 11 rebounds, giving him the only double-double of the night, and blocked three shots.
The Minutemen struggled from the floor in the first half shooting just 35 percent to 50 percent for the Eagles. Included in that, UMass went 1-for-12 from behind the arc.
Lasme and Freeman were the highlights of the Minutemen offense scoring 10 and 12 points, respectively. Boston College countered with 13 points from Marshall and 10 points from Williams.
Senior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored his only two points of the first half to give UMass an 11-8 lead before the Eagles took control of the first half. Boston College went on a 22-to-8 run to open a 30-19 lead. BC went into the intermission with a 39-27 lead.
UMass stormed out of the gates to open the second half pulling within five, 46-41, on a Life three-pointer with 15:48 remaining in the game. Life finished the game with eight points.
The Minutemen again went cold from the floor as Boston College went on a 20-to-3 run taking a 66-44 lead with 9:41 to go. The Eagles held UMass without a basket for almost five minutes until Lasme flushed a reverse dunk at the 10:49 mark.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday night when UMass heads to Boston University for an 8 p.m. tip in Agganis Arena.
