Greg Mauldin Scores Game-Winner as Hockey Defeats Northeastern, 4-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds remaining in the second period to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 4-2 victory over Northeastern in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center.

Mauldin netted his first career goal when he fired home a loose puck near the goal mouth. Freshman Craig MacDonald (Canton, Mass.) and junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the goal. Turner added an empty net goal with 19 seconds remaining in the third period to give the Minutemen the 4-2 victory. Junior Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) assisted on the goal.

Massachusetts opened the scoring 1:03 into the game when MacDonald scored from the slot with a wrist shot. Turner and Mauldin assisted on the goal. Northeastern responded with a power-play goal from Jim Fahey at the 12:12 mark of the first period to tie the game, 1-1. The Huskies took the lead three minutes later when Mike Ryan scored his fifth goal of the season. Willie Levesque and Jason Guerriero assisted on both Northeastern goals.

UMass knotted the game, 2-2, just over four minutes into the second period with a power-play goal. Sophomore Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) scored off a one-timer from the top of the right face-off circle. Seniors Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) and Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the goal.

UMass senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 18 saves for the victory, while Mike Gilhooly and Jason Braun combined for 17 saves for the Huskies. The victory improves Massachusetts to 3-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Northeastern to 2-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Hockey East.

Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Nov. 9, when it travels to Michigan State for a 7:05 p.m. non-conference game. The Minutemen return home to face Connecticut on Sunday, Nov. 11, in a 7:00 p.m. at the Springfield Civic Center.
