AMHERST, Mass. - UMass cross country runners Shiyi Zan and Kevin Johnson have been named the UMass Fall Scholar Athletes, it was announced on Wednesday. Zan and Johnson were honored for their ability to balance their highly successful academic pursuits while still competing at a high level in their respective sports.
In November, Zan and Johnson were recognized for their academic and athletic excellence when the two were voted to the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Academic All-Conference teams. Both have truly embodied what it means to be a UMass student-athlete.
The redshirt junior co-captain Zan has maintained a 3.944 GPA at UMass in addition to being one of the Minutewomen's most successful and consistent runners. Zan placed in all five meets that she competed in this fall and was the team's second place finisher four times. Junior Kevin Johnson has been able to keep a 4.00 GPA while emerging as one of the top runners for the Minutemen. Johnson scored in all five meets that he competed in and led the team for three straight meets. Johnson grabbed seventh place overall (26:57.8) at the Atlantic 10 Championships and led UMass to an impressive second place finish. At the NCAA Regional Qualifier, Johnson once again led UMass with his time of 32:47 in the 10k and a 43rd place finish out of 244 total harriers.
