Season's End Looming, Women's Cross Country To Compete In NCAA Regionals Friday

MADISON, Conn. - This week the Minutewomen will compete in perhaps their final meet of the 2012 season. The squad will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday and pending their performance, could either move on to the NCAA Championships next week, or their season will come to a close. The team left campus for Madison, Conn. Thursday and will run against the best in the northeast at 12:00 pm tomorrow afternoon.
In the conference championships, Carly Zinner, Sarah Barrett and Rachel Hilliard again led UMass finishing first second and third respectively. Zinner finished 35th overall in her first ever conference championships, tying her season best time of 18:53.9. Coming in 63rd overall was the junior Barrett. Barrett, who has improved her times weekly this season, finished second for the Minutewomen and crossed the finish line at 19:19.5, her best race of the year. Not far behind her in 63rd place overall at 19:25.3 was the sophomore Hilliard.
Coming in fourth for UMass in the A-10 Championships was freshman, Molly McMahon. McMahon finished the race at 19:33.9 in 77th place overall. Tomorrow racing in her first meet since the Paul Short Invitational back in September will be the team's other standout freshman, Lizzy Blanchard. The freshman's best time of the season came back on September 15 at the Minuteman Invitational when she finished with a time 20:00.72. Katie Powers and Hannah White will also compete in tomorrows race. The sophomores each competed in the A-10 Championships with Powers coming in fifth for UMass and White finishing seventh. Powers crossed the finish line at 19:43.1, her second best time of the year, and White finished at 20:11.7.
If any of the Minutewomen are to qualify for the NCAA Championships next week, the team will travel to Louisville, Ky. for a start time of 12:00 p.m. on November 17.
