Women's Cross Concludes Season At NCAA Regionals

AMHERST, N.Y. - This Saturday will mark the conclusion of 2011 cross country campaign for the UMass Minutewomen. Julie LaFreniere's squad is slated to travel to the Amherst of a different state, for a 1 p.m. 6K race in Amherst, N.Y.

With 230 points, the UMass harriers placed tenth at last weekend's A-10 Championship meet in a field of 14 conference squads. Leading the path as she has done all season long was senior Karen Roa in fifth place by crossing the line at 17:37.7. The Jamaica, N.Y. native, who has been UMass' top competitor in five meets this season, was also named to the A-10 All-Conference Team for her performance in Charlotte, N.C.

Also scoring at the A-10 Meet were Rachel Hilliard (52nd, 18:58.9), Courtney Baldwin (55th, 19:01.1), Sarah Barrett (61, 19:03.4), and Katie Powers (74th, 19:13.8). Between those who scored at A-10's, 22 top five personal finishes have been recorded among the quintet this fall.

Returning from last year's NCAA Regional Championships are Roa, Baldwin, and Mary Cole. Roa was the best of the pack among the UMass harriers in 2010, taking home 47th in 21:25. Baldwin finished fourth on the team and 115th overall, while Cole registered a seventh place team finish and 164th overall.

The women's 6K takes place on the Audubon Golf Course in Buffalo, N.Y. According to BuffaloBulls.com, the course is a flat and outlined in a loop to be excited for the competitors as well as for the spectators.
