Atlantic 10 Championship Awaits Women's Cross In Richmond Va.
Oct. 30, 2013
RICHMOND, Va. -
Massachusetts At The Atlantic 10 Championship
The highly anticipated 2013 Cross Country Atlantic 10 Championship is finally here and the Minutewomen are scheduled to race at 10:50 a.m. at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Va. The Minutewomen expect to finish better than their eighth place preseason ranking despite losing three of their better runners to injury.
Julie LaFreniere started the season with a lot of depth, adding a highly praised freshman class and returning all of her best runners while adding runners who had missed the season prior to injury. Christine Davis is one-of-two freshmen left standing who has made an impact for her team week-to-week. Coach LaFreniere brought in five freshmen to make an immediate impact however three have been lost to injury.
Even with the injuries, the depth of the team has allowed the Minutewomen to continue to compete at a high level throughout the regular season. Rachel Hilliard led the team in four out of the five regular season meets this year with a third place finish for UMass in last week's race. Two other runners who will be forces this weekend alongside Davis and Hilliard will be Katie Powers and Alexandra Purdue-Smithe. Powers has improved with each meet, making her way from the back of the top seven to the front in recent weeks. Purdue-Smithe is a runner the team added in 2013 as she missed the 2012 season with an injury. The redshirt junior has finished in the top five of UMass' pack in all five of the meets this season with three performances landing her in the top three.
