Minutewomen To Compete In A-10 Conference Championships
Oct. 25, 2012
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - On Saturday the Minutewomen will compete in the highly anticipated A-10 Championships where the team will go head-to-head with the conference's top runners. Many of the team's top runners posted season bests in the Rothenberg Race last Friday and the squad will look to carry their momentum into A-10s.
Carly Zinner led the pack with a season best time of 18:53.9. Three of Zinner's teammates have improved each week, all of them posting season best times. Sarah Barrett came in third for UMass with a time of 19:20.8, crossing the finish line just behind her was Kate Powers at 19:24.8 with her best time of the season. Senior Danielle McNiff also ran her best so far last week when she crossed the line at 19:46.5.
Rachel Hilliard finished second for the squad last week but her best time of the season and since she arrived at UMass came in the spotlight of the New England Championships with a time of 18:42.05 when she placed first for the team on a very difficult course.
Last year' A-10 Championship was highlighted by a fifth place finish overall by UMass graduate Karen Roa. In second place for the Minutewomen was a promising freshman. Rachel Hilliard placed 52nd overall in a field of 128 total harriers. Hilliards time in the 5K race was 18:58.9 and was closely followed by Courtney Baldwin in 55th place overall. Sarah Barrett will strive to continue to improve as well as impress coach Julie LaFreniere this week. The junior placed 61st and fourth for her teammates with a time of 19:03.4. Sophomore harrier Katie Powers also will look to make an impact this weekend. Powers placed fifth for the team and 74th overall.
The Minutewomen will travel down to Belmont Plateau, Philadelphia, Pa. for the Cross Country A-10 Championships. Making the trip to the championships will be Hilliard, Zinner, Barrett, Powers, McNiff, Molly McMahon, Hannah White, Alex Purdue-Smithe, Katie Ayers, Caprice Cappucci as well as senior Danielle Allocco. The start time is set for 10:00 AM.
