UMass Cross Country Takes Three Atlantic 10 Weekly Awards
Oct. 12, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Courtney Baldwin and senior Jonathan Pierce were both named Atlantic 10 Performer's of the Week after their achievements at the New England Championships. Baldwin, who ran in her first career NCAA race, was also named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. The awards signify the culmination of a fantastic weekend for UMass cross country.
Baldwin's exceptional debut launched the Minutewomen to a 14th place finish out of 49 teams. She finished the 5k in 18:22, coming in as the 16th runner in a field of 322 harriers. In her first career race, Baldwin certainly burst onto the cross country scene. Hopefully this performance is a sign of greater things to come.
For Pierce, the Championships marked the second week in a row where he was the first finisher for UMass. Pierce propelled the Minutemen to second place out of 47 teams, crossing at 24:42. His time was good enough for fifth place overall in a field of 320 runners.
Pierce's strong performance comes a week after being named the UMass Athlete of the Week. At last week's Paul Short Invitational, Pierce came in 37th place out of 386 runners. He finished the 8k in 24:27, and led UMass to an eighth place finish out of 42 teams.
Both cross country teams will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 17. The men will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the ISU Pre-Nationals, while the Minutewomen will head to Albany, N.Y., for the Albany Invitational. The men's race will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the women's race will kick-off at 10:35 a.m.
