Boston, Mass. - The UMass cross country teams will head to Boston this Saturday, October 11 to compete in the New England Championships held in Franklin Park. The men's team moved up one spot to number five this week in the New England Cross Country Poll, while the women are holding strong at number 20. The Minutemen are also ranked sixth in the Northeast region of the USTFCCCA poll. After impressive finishes last weekend in the Paul Short Invitational, both the Minutemen and Minutewomen hope to improve on their eighth and sixteenth place finishes from last year.

The Minutemen look to veteran senior Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) to lead the pack as he has done all season. Last year at New England Championships, Fischer finished second on the team, 30th overall to help the Minutemen to an eighth place finish. Senior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.), a consistent strong finisher on the harrier squad this season, led the Minutemen last year, taking 13th place overall. Sophomore Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Falls, N.J.), the Minutemen's steady second place finisher, will also be expected to finish strong as he crossed the finish line just 13 seconds after Fischer last weekend for a 39th of 295 ranking. Also in the mix will be junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) who crossed 45th overall, third on the team, for the Minutemen last weekend.

On the Minutewomen's side, redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) is expected to lead this young harrier team as she has all season. In Bethelem, Pa. last weekend, Zan finished first on the team, 58th of 301 runners overall to lead the Minutewomen to a 27th place finish. Freshman Karen Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) has consistently finished second for the squad, placing in the top half of the overall field last weekend. Sophomore Kristin Darling (Miller Place, N.Y.) and senior Beth Harlow (Melrose, Mass.) placed third and fourth respectively at the New Englands last season. This young team will look to these runners for guidance at this crucial meet.

The women's sub-varsity race begins at noon with the women's varsity starting at 12:45 PM. The men's varsity kicks off at 1:30 PM, while the sub-varsity commences last at 2:15 PM.
